Meet Officer Kora, the Asheville Police Department’s beloved therapy dog who recently won the 2024 First Responder Paws Therapy Dog Award.
A 3-year-old Goldendoodle, Kora joined the Asheville Police Department (APD) in April 2023 after completing eight months of rigorous training at Highland Canine Training in Harmony, NC. With her handler, Senior Police Officer Debbie LeCroy, Kora quickly became a beacon of hope and comfort for the Asheville community and first responders.

Certified through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), Kora is one of only two certified therapy dogs in the region covering North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Kora’s role in the community is nothing short of extraordinary. She has been a vital part of disaster relief efforts, providing comfort and support to those affected by Hurricane Helene. Kora also assists crime victims and helps first responders during crises, making her a true symbol of resilience and compassion.
But it’s not all serious work for Kora. She regularly “paw-trols” downtown Asheville in her custom cart, complete with blue lights, and participates in school and community programs, brightening lives with her vibrant personality and colorful outfits.

The national recognition Kora received is a testament to her incredible impact. Competing against therapy dogs from across the country, Kora was named a Top 10 finalist on December 9 and ultimately won the award on December 13.
As the award winner, Kora received a $2,000 check to support her work, a gift basket from Chewy.com, a “Top Paws Therapy Dog Award” badge for recognition on digital platforms, and a $2,500 donation in her honor by FHE Health to the First Responders Pack Foundation.
Officer LeCroy, Kora’s handler, couldn’t be prouder. “Kora is more than a therapy dog; she represents hope, compassion, and resilience for our community,” she said. Kora’s journey from a rescue litter to a national award-winning therapy dog is a heartwarming reminder of the incredible bond between humans and animals and the profound impact they can have on our lives.
