The blog of overachieving dogs

Fighting fires and stress one cuddle at a time

When life seems to go up in flames, somehow, a dog’s love can make it better.

In the midst of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, retired fireman Victor Laveaga and his 11-year-old Golden Retriever therapy dog, Jack, are bringing hope and comfort to first responders and evacuees, according to ABC News.

A volunteer chaplain for the Pasadena Fire Department, Laveaga takes Jack to greet firefighters returning to base camp, as well as displaced families at evacuation centers. Their presence provides a much-needed emotional outlet for those who have faced extreme challenges and losses.

Laveaga recalls a touching moment when a soot-covered firefighter found solace in petting Jack, highlighting the profound impact of their work. Through their efforts, Laveaga and Jack are making a significant difference, one hug and cuddle at a time.

The Impact of Therapy Dogs:

Therapy dogs like Jack have proven benefits for people coping with stress and anxiety.

  • According to UCLA Health, animal interaction releases powerful hormones such as oxytocin and serotonin, which help us relax and lower our blood pressure.
  • A randomized controlled trial found that older adults who interacted with therapy dogs experienced a notable reduction in loneliness compared to those who did not
  • Additionally, therapy dogs have been found to alleviate pain and improve overall emotional well-being.

While it will take years for LA and surrounding communities to rebuild from the devastation, in the meantime, Jack’s sniffs and cuddles are making a difference for those struggling today.
