The power of the canine nose knows no limits. (That’s a lot of nose.)
As reported by Geekwire, Nala the English Labrador Retriever is not your average police dog. As a member of the Seattle Police Department and the Washington state’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force, she has a very special set of skills: sniffing out electronic devices.
Trained in electronic storage detection, Nala can locate anything from smartphones to micro SD cards, crucial in gathering evidence for cases of child pornography and sexual exploitation.
Nala’s training allows her to detect the chemical compound triphenylphosphine oxide, commonly found in electronic components. This skill came into the spotlight during a significant case involving a former Expedia Group employee accused of hiding cameras in company bathrooms. While Nala was on vacation, another ESD K9, Trinity, stepped in to assist, leading to the discovery of additional spy cameras in the suspect’s home.
Will work for treats
Like many of us humans, Nala and Trinity are “food motivated,” meaning they only eat when they successfully find a device.
Nala’s contribution to the Seattle Police Department and the broader community is invaluable. She represents a new frontier in law enforcement, where technology and animal instinct combine to protect the most vulnerable.
